When I was planning on doing an addition to my house, I needed an architect who specialized in small additions. Katharine not only designed a new addition, but also the whole house. She suggested new ways to arrange space and effectively transformed our vague ideas into clearly communicated plans. She is a considerate architect and helps out customers’ needs. She always communicated promptly and thoroughly addressed our questions and concerns. I would strongly recommend working with her!

dEmios is a top notch operation. Katharine is professional, highly experienced, timely, and has a keen eye for renovation. Our home project was very expansive and we needed some expertise to get this started. She not only did a superb job developing a set of plans for the project, but she had referrals for contractors to get our renovation from paper to construction. My wife and I are very impressed with Katharine and her company. We highly recommend her for any renovation or new construction project.

I hired Katharine to prepare architectural plans for my bathroom renovation, she was excellent. She took the extra time to understand exactly what I wanted and what I didn’t want. I was so appreciative of her quick turnaround time with the plans. She presented 4 scenarios, some I never even thought about and liked more than my own first idea. She stayed right on her original quoted price. My contractor was very pleased and impressed with the plans. She even followed up with me later to see how my project was going. If I have another project, Katharine will be the architect I will call.

I hired Katherine to help transform a dark, cramped cape into an open, light filled home. I was grateful that she saw the same potential in my new house that I did and I was very pleased with her overall approach to its renovation. She was very open to my ideas and tweaks to her design and was always available for my needs. She was invaluable in helping to find a contractor, in the permitting process and in overseeing the work and completion. Her low-drama demeanor was much appreciated and I truly love the flow and feel of my new home.
I have recently rehired her for some deck work in the back yard and her work continues to be top notch.

We are planning to take down the existing three season porch on our house and in its place add a new family room, study, and bathroom on the first floor, and a bedroom on the second floor. Katharine was able to take our vision and make it into reality. Her careful attention to detail, her professionalism, and her ability to work with our plans and improve them were evident in every meeting she had with us and every drawing she did. She even worked with our city building department to make sure everything went smoothly. Katharine also worked with an eye to practicality and cost and helped us to work within our budget. In addition, she is a very pleasant person to work with, and very understanding and sympathetic. We give her an enthusiastic recommendation.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of working closely with Katherine for over a year on extensive renovation plans for our home. We started by laying out all of our pipe dreams, which was wonderfully therapeutic and satisfying, and Katherine drew up these preliminary plans, which actually made the process of peeling off the layers to a more reasonable project manageable. Katherine's calm manner and practical judgment were invaluable. She listened to everything we said, never pushed a design agenda or preference, recalled us to what had initially seemed like the cornerstone of our objectives, helped us better understand what it was we wanted in a house and somehow led us to a set of beautiful plans. She is timely, competent, straightforward, supportive in finding contractors and open to meeting with them to explain the scope of the project, helpful with attaining permits, surveys, etc.

We are done with the plans and now look forward to moving forward with our new space!

We interviewed several architects for an addition and renovation project in 2011 and chose Katharine because of her creativity, flexibility, and thoughtfulness. Throughout the process, Katharine was a pleasure to work with and added significant value in the way she helped us think about our use of the space. She worked with us to design a space that addressed our aesthetic preferences and accommodated our disparate sleep/work schedules and a busy home office in a small Victorian workers’ cottage in an urban neighborhood. And when we -- after interviewing six contractors, making it into the top 10 projects for This Old House, and getting all our variances and approvals from the City -- decided to sell the house without doing the project, Katharine was understanding and supportive.

When we finally found our current home – a large house from the 1850s with 60 years of deferred maintenance and updates -- Katharine helped us redesign and reconfigure the first floor, including a huge kitchen and half bath; design two full bathrooms, which included ingeniously borrowing space from a closet in one and an adjacent room in the other; and several other key details. Her recommendations for fixtures, cabinets, and materials were invaluable, as were her recommendations on contractors and suppliers. She developed an easy rapport with the contractor we selected, even though they hadn’t worked together previously.

Katharine’s insights on flow and ease of use in the kitchen, bathrooms, and reconfiguration of the first floor created spaces that are livable, perfect for entertaining, and timelessly designed. When friends visit, especially those who saw the house before we renovated, they are struck by how “everything makes sense” and “it seems like it always should have been like this.” That’s exactly what we wanted in our home, and we’re already looking forward to future projects with Katharine.

Katherine was wonderful at accommodating our initial vision while also making great suggestions as things unfolded. We were doing a substantial house renovation, and we appreciated her low-key way of approaching the project. Katherine maintained the integrity of our home while bringing fresh and open space which we've loved living in. She was a skilled professional while also considerate of our budget, worked really well with our contractor, and the whole thing was about as painless as one could wish!

We considered several architects before settling on Katharine for our Belmont home remodel. Some of the things we wanted to do went against conventional wisdom, and Katharine was more than willing to work with that and to help us figure out the rest of the project so it all fits together beautifully. She has been very responsive throughout the design and construction bid process, quick to provide ideas and multiple alternative drawings wherever we've needed them. Always professional and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended.

Project Price: : $1,000 - $9,999

Katharine was great. We had only a general idea of what we wanted when we first began planning our project, and Katharine brought a lot of great ideas that pulled it all together. She fully understands a project life cycle, from planning to permitting to building, and was invaluable in helping us navigate our project. She was very responsive throughout the entire process, meticulous in her designs, and made the design process a ton of fun.

Creative, responsive, respectful of her clients' desires and budget, and an all-around lovely person; Katharine White MacPhail is always on the top of my list when I recommend architects to my real estate clients. She designed a beautiful kitchen and master bath for one of my best clients, and she has frequently consulted for clients who simply want an idea of their home's possibilities. I will continue to recommend this very talented architect for projects big and small.
